Three accessory veins to the great saphenous vein were listed, anterior, posterior and superficial, by Caggiati et al. (2002) Nomenclature of the veins of the lower limbs: An international interdisciplinary consensus statement. J Vasc Surg 36:416-422.

It has been suggested to separate the perforating veins. For further subdivision, see Caggiati et al. (2002) J Vasc Surg 36:416-422; Caggiati et al. 2005 J Vasc Surg 41:719-724).

The sural veins comprise soleal, gastrocnemius and intergemellar veins (Caggiati et al. 2002 J Vasc Surg 36:416-422; Kachlik et al. 2012 Phlebology 27:48-58).

At the knee, veins are arranged in a complex plexus of interconnecting veins (Caggiati et al. 2002 J Vasc Surg 36:416-422; Kachlik et al. 2012 Phlebology 27:48-58).

The deeper veins of the foot, accompanying the deeper arteries, are listed (Caggiati et al. 2002 J Vasc Surg 36:416-422; Kachlik et al. 2012 Phlebology 27:48-58).

This extension is a cranial/proximal continuation of the small saphenous vein, ascending from the fossa poplitea on the posterior asppect of the thigh (Sagoo et al. 2004 Phlebology 33:1-7; Cavezzi et al. 2006 Eur J Vasc Endovasc Surg 31:288-299).

The cranial/proximal extension of the small saphenous vein may continue as the Intersaphenous vein of the thigh (Sagoo et al. 2004 Phlebology 33:1-7; Cavezzi et al. 2006 Eur J Vasc Endovasv Surg 31:288-299).

New term for the deep veins accompanying perforant arteries of the thigh (Caggiati et al. 2002, 2005; Kachlik et al. 2012).

New term for the vein accompanying the sciatic nerve (Caggiati et al. 2002 J Vasc Surg 36:416-422; Kachlik et al. 2012 Phlebology 27:48-58).

The intergemellar vein ascends between the medial and lateral heads of the gastrocnemius muscle (Kachlik et al. 2012 Phlebology 27:48-58).
